‘80s Heavy Metal Icon Labeled as ‘Two Hit Wonder’ Turns 71

Dee Snider, the iconic frontman of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister, is marking his 71st birthday.
Known for his flamboyant appearance and electrifying stage presence, the beloved lead vocalist helped shape the 1980s music scene with his rebellious energy and arena-ready anthems.
Born on March 15, 1955, in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens in New York City, he grew up on Long Island where he spent his formative years developing his voice and discovering music.
Before being celebrated as the heavy metal icon he is today, Snider’s musical beginnings were far from loud rock stages. He was a classically trained singer who honed his voice in a church choir.
During his time at Baldwin High School, he was selected for the All-State Choir.
In a report cited by LI Herald, his classmate described him as someone who was already “musically inclined.”
“I remember Dee singing in the halls quite often,” a former schoolmate, told the outlet, while another former BHS student, mentioned, “He was always trying to get this or that jam session going.”

“By then, he was showing his rock and roll side,” fellow BHS choir singer shared.
His shift from classical and gospel singing to rock music came after high school.

After playing in a few local rock bands throughout the mid-1970s, he eventually joined Twisted Sister in 1976, quickly emerging as the band’s frontman and sole songwriter.
Throughout his professional career with the band, they released a string of notable songs. Among them were "We're Not Gonna Take It" and “I Wanna Rock.”
Both released in 1984 on the album Stay Hungry, the two songs became their signature anthems, eventually leading critics to label them "two-hit wonders.”
"We're Not Gonna Take It" became their biggest mainstream success, peaking at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyond its chart performance, the song also symbolized the rebellious spirit of the ‘80s.
As for their second mainstream success, Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock” reached No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Unfortunately, it was only on Feb. 5 that he stepped back as the band’s frontman. According to him, he wanted to focus on his health following severe health issues.
His surprising move forced the band to cancel their planned 50th-anniversary reunion tour. Originally scheduled to take place sometime this year, the tour was called off as he shifted his focus to recovery after suffering long-term physical damage from decades of high-intensity performing.
