Johnny Whitaker says starring on Family Affair felt “normal,” and he “didn’t really know” he was acting
In a new interview, the former child star admits he loved the attention and fame that came with the hit series
Whitaker later stepped back from Hollywood, however, to focus on school sports and living a more typical teenage life
Johnny Whitaker is reflecting on his years as one of television’s most recognizable child stars — admitting that while filming Family Affair, he didn’t fully realize just how unusual his life really was.
Whitaker, who became a household name playing lovable redheaded youngster Jody Davis on the hit sitcom from 1966 to 1971, recently opened up about his early fame in an interview withWoman's World. Looking back, the actor said life on set felt so routine to him that he barely viewed it as “acting” at all.
“At the time, though, I didn’t see it as a career. I didn’t really know that I was acting,” Whitaker, 66, admitted. “I knew that not all young boys leave the house at 7:00 am nine months out of the year, go to the set by 8:00, go to school, go on set, go to lunch, go back to school, go back to set, come home… and start it all over five days a week.”

For Whitaker, that demanding schedule simply became a routine part of everyday life.
“That was normal for me. I didn’t necessarily know that I was not normal, but I knew that it was not usual and customary,” he continued. “So, when I wasn’t on a set, I yearned to be on a set, because that was a comfortable place for me.”
Premiering in 1966, Family Affair followed bachelor Bill Davis, played by Brian Keith, who suddenly becomes guardian to his nieces and nephew after a family tragedy. Whitaker starred alongside Anissa Jones, who played his twin sister Buffy, and the series quickly became a television staple during its five-season run.

With fame came intense public attention — something Whitaker admits he genuinely enjoyed as a child.

“Being adulated by 15,000 or 20,000 people in a mall is something I basked in. I loved it,” he told Woman's World, noting that Jones felt differently about the spotlight. “Anissa, not so much. She was more quiet and reserved in real life.”
As Whitaker got older, however, he began craving a more grounded experience outside Hollywood. Eventually, he scaled back his acting workload so he could focus on school and everyday teenage life.
“I was on the gymnastics team and also was a Yell King — a cheerleader — and was into student government,” Whitaker shared. “I had a great opportunity to do plays and be as normal as I could be.”
Despite the perks of fame, Whitaker says there was always a contrast between being celebrated in public and returning home to a busy household.
“Being a child star and a child actor, everybody loves you. You’re always coddled and cuddled and loved, and all of us are looking for acceptance and love. So of course I liked that,” he explained. “At the same time, when I came home, I was one of eight siblings and I had to get back in my pecking order there.”
