What time will the Super Bowl end? When history says Patriots vs. Seahawks will wrap

The NFL has done a great job turning the Super Bowl into the premier sporting event that it is.

That said, there's still one flaw in its current setup. Most people still have to go to work the day after the Super Bowl.

That may not always be the case. There have long been rumors that the NFL is looking to extend its regular season to 18 games. Such a setup would allow the league to push its season back another week and make the Super Bowl annually occur the day before President's Day, a national holiday.

However, such a resolution between players and owners has not yet been reached. As a result, many will continue to keep one eye on their watches as they watch the end of the Super Bowl.

When does the Super Bowl typically end? Here's what to know about the game's start time and when the game could finish up, if recent history is any indication.

Super Bowl VII (Dolphins 14, Washington 7): Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Manny Fernandez (75) tackles Washington running back Larry Brown (43) in Super Bowl VII at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Dolphins completed a 17-0 undefeated season with the win.

Kickoff: 6:30 p.m. ET

Super Bowl 60 will kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. locally in Santa Clara, the site of the game). NBC has the broadcast rights to the New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks battle and will begin its pregame coverage of the event at 1 p.m. ET.

What time will the Super Bowl end? -

End time (rough estimate): 10-10:15 p.m. ET

The Super Bowl doesn't have a set end time, but the game will likely wrap up between 10 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. ET, if recent history is any indication.

The last 20 Super Bowls have lasted an average of about 3 hours and 37 minutes. If Super Bowl 60 starts on time and holds to form, that would put the game on schedule to end at 10:07 p.m. ET.

Of course, it's possible the Super Bowl could finish outside that 15-minute range. The shortest Super Bowl since 2006 – the New Orleans Saints' 34-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44 – lasted just 3 hours and 14 minutes.

Meanwhile, the two longest Super Bowls of the last two decades – the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl 47 win over the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl 58 win over the 49ers – each lasted an excess of four hours.

Perhaps the best comparison for Super Bowl 60 will be the last time the Patriots and Seahawks played in the big game. Super Bowl 49 lasted 3 hours and 36 minutes from kickoff until New England's final kneel-down after Malcolm Butler's game-winning goal-line interception.

A replicated run-time in the sequel would put Super Bowl 60 on track to end at 10:06 p.m. ET.
